The Leading Record of the Year: Rosalía's Lux Secures the Top Spot.

On the surface, Lux could seem more like a difficult academic challenge rather than the latest pop album by an artist who just had a previous hit was a collaboration with a global pop star. Divided into 4 different parts and performed in thirteen languages, we have a breathtaking symphonic opus exploring feminine mystique, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently through the perspective of various women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic treated with grounded honesty on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward on this record, supported by the lush sound of a major orchestra and input from an award-winning songwriter among an extensive roll call of contributors. The pure audacity by itself renders the efforts of contemporary artists seem rather laughable.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album manages to avoid dry academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of a miracle, and sole credit belonging to the artist. While it's not the first time album to blend the past and the present, the ambitions are far higher here, with the tightrope walk more dramatic. The element that really elevates this fourth album, beyond its complex melodies, rich arrangements, and inherent theatricality, is an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the iconic Björk during her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its tornado. When she's breaking hearts in two, you nevertheless desire to stay alongside her for the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

This playful spirit comes forth clearly during the stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for several minutes. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh and a declaration prior to a comically exaggerated string surge crashes in with comedic force. The song then segues to the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise appearance from the artist herself.

"The magic with this album is that you rarely quite understand—nor want to know—what it is going to next."

Nearly every track ends at a completely different point than where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate symphony only to disintegrating into electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins off moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic choir enter to smooth the song's jagged corners.

The Bridge Of Art & Accessibility

Another crucial achievement of Lux involves navigating the line between radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is no surprise that it has achieved her first release to crack the Top 5 of major charts: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that seems to gather increasingly nagging melodies as it spirals skyward. That feat is repeated by another powerful track that expands and constricts, weaving multiple melodies like an intricate tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song charms with its playful, Disney-adjacent drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with cultural honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across the album, the singing have a painted-on edge, akin to a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art amid of looming AI-generated sameness. It rejects self-absorption for sublime transcendence, creating an over-the-top drama that skillfully controls its own inherent ridiculousness. It is an abundant source of buried treasure that takes patience to completely mine but doesn't seem like a chore. Where other major releases of 2025 seemed like feasting on meal, this record is a sumptuous feast at which the guests around it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter from conversations about ancient saints, the profound sensation of soul-shattering grief, and shared stories about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly creative visionary.
