Government Official States MoD Investigating Security Risk from Vehicles from China, as Personnel Advised to Avoid Confidential Discussions in Vehicles.

A defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in all cars.

Security Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while riding in Chinese vehicles.

The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, however noted that safety is a issue in every modern vehicles.

Our department has a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret level in any car, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those secret conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about safety.

After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Context

The announcement follows claims from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose kill switches in Chinese buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This broader security environment underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every areas of government operations, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
